“UNTIL THE SUMMER” by Christina Kypreou and Michalis Pitidis

Kavala’s Old Swimming Pool
Monday 4 – Tuesday 5 September, at 21.00

The Municipal Theatre of Kavala presents on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th September at 21.00 at the Old Swimming Pool of Kavala, the new play “Until the summer” that was written exclusively for the 66th Philippi Festival by Christina Kypreou and Michalis Pitidis. A unique performance dedicated to all those who spend their summer working seasonal jobs.

Summer: The heat, the sea, holidays, childhood memories, carelessness, laziness. Summer as a product. The product of “the country’s biggest industry”. The children who used to spend their days digging holes on the beach are now holding trays, filling coolers, making beds for seasonal visitors.

As soon as the weather warms up, there is a huge change. Like a natural phenomenon. Coastal towns increase their population by 10 or even 20 times. Streets light up, buildings are inhabited, swimming pools overflow, public spaces are taken over by furniture and people. Villages, beaches and towns are transformed to welcome these transient visitors. A transformation that requires method, organisation, money and a lot of hard work. The seasonal work for the summer. For some it’s their first job, for others it’s an emergency solution, for many it’s their regular job. In recent years, there has been an increase in seasonal job vacancies. This year alone, more than 60,000 jobs have gone unfilled. Young people say: They are turning their backs on them. What can a young person expect from a job? What makes a job good? The salary? The hours? The insurance? The stability? Or is it something more intangible? A job that you feel is fulfilling, important. A job that gives you room to grow? What are these jobs that we spend our summers in and on which a whole country is basing its economic future? And who are the people who work in them? What do they feel? What do they hope for?
