HECUBA by Euripides

Ancient Theatre of Philippi
Saturday 15 – Sunday 16 July, at 21.30

The performance ‘Hecuba’, directed by Io Voulgaraki, will be presented on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July at 9.30pm at the Ancient Theatre of Philippi, as part of the 66th Philippi Festival.

Every day images of war, images of unbearable violence and heartbreak arrive on our screens from every corner of the world. The absurdity of war seems to concern only those who live it, for everyone else it is reduced to dry, virtual and harmless information. It is buried in a mass of news, cut off from the experience of mourning. In this way we become accustomed to the image and information of violence, we are trained in death, but we have forgotten how to mourn.

Hecuba, in Euripides’ tragedy of the same name, begins as a person from this point, from what we have forgotten, the path of mourning. In the first part of the play, mourning, both personal and collective, seems to give birth to its metaphysics: the living and the dead are in constant conversation, an unburied boy disturbs his mother’s sleep, a girl stands on the edge of life and death. Everything in Hecuba takes place in a liminal time, after the end of the war. But the violence has not ended. And it is there, in the time of transition, that the Hecuba of mourning becomes the Hecuba of revenge, opening up a courageous conversation with the present.

A large company of exceptional actors and musicians and a new translation by Eleni Varopoulou, produced especially for this performance, are the pillars of the project.
