“Thebes Land”, the breakout hit of recent theatre seasons, now in its third year in Athens with repeated sold-out shows and over 100,000 spectators to date, is coming to the Ancient Theatre of Philippi on Sunday 24 August at 21:00, as part of the 68th Philippi Festival.
THE PERFORMANCE
A writer spends several months visiting a twenty-year-old parricide, Martin, in prison. His intention is to write a play based on the young man’s story, and he proposes that Martin portray himself on stage. When this is ultimately prohibited by the ministry responsible, the role is taken on by Federico, a young actor with whom the writer begins working simultaneously.
Franco-Uruguayan playwright Sergio Blanco, one of the most powerful voices in contemporary Spanish-language theatre, delivers a modern study on masculine identity, oppression, violence and crime, punishment, and discrimination, while also exploring the creative processes of theatrical art itself, with references to the myth of Oedipus and Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment.
Distinguished director Vangelis Theodoropoulos brings out the many layers of the text with a production highly praised by critics and riveting to audiences, thanks to its exceptional rhythm and imposing atmosphere.
The performance has become established as a major theatrical event, primarily due to the outstanding performances of the actors, Thanos Lekkas in the role of the Author, and the talented and popular actor Dimitris Kapouranis, who was awarded the Dimitris Horn Prize for 2022–2023 for his portrayal of the dual role of Martín/Federico.
