Carlo Goldoni’s masterpiece “The Servant of Two Masters”, directed by Giannis Kakleas, will be presented on Wednesday 20 August at 21:00 at the Ancient Theatre of Philippi, as part of the 68th Philippi Festival.
Vasilis Charalambopoulos takes on the emblematic role of Truffaldino, the cunning servant who tries to serve two masters at once, creating an unrivalled mosaic of misunderstandings, comic situations, and timeless commentary on human nature.
At his side, the acclaimed and beloved actress Fay Xyla takes on one of the leading roles, bringing her unique energy and expressive power to the stage.
Known for his original and explosive directorial approach, Giannis Kakleas directs a distinguished cast, breathing new life into Goldoni’s timeless satire with vitality, imagination, and a brisk pace.
A landmark work of world comedy
Written in 1745, “The Servant of Two Masters” is one of the most popular works of the commedia dell’arte, which Carlo Goldoni renewed by giving it a more structured narrative and multi-dimensional characters.
At the heart of the story is Truffaldino, a poor but cunning servant, who, in order to secure his daily meals, decides to work for two masters at once, without revealing his deceit to either. This decision leads to a cascade of twists, misunderstandings, and hilarious mishaps, while at the same time the play satirically and humourously comments on corruption, hypocrisy, and class conflict.
The play
Giannis Kakleas, with his singular directorial brilliance, approaches the play through a contemporary, dynamic lens, highlighting both its comedic and social depth. His direction draws on the rhythm and physicality of commedia dell’arte, creating a frenzied, explosive performance in which love, hunger, and survival intertwine in a timeless game of power and desire.
Vasilis Charalambopoulos, with his boundless talent for physical comedy and his precision as an actor, brings to life a delightful Truffaldino, offering audiences one of his most captivating performances, while Fay Xyla adds her own distinct expressive force, revealing the delicate balance between the comic and dramatic elements of the play.
The performance will tour across Greece, bringing to audiences an exuberant theatrical take on Carlo Goldoni’s classic work.
