The Philippi Festival travels to the Greek National Opera

12-16 September
Performances on 12-13-14 at the GNO
15-16 September (performance on board the Piraeus – Aegina line)

The Kavala Municipal and Regional Theatre and the Greek National Opera, following the memorandum of understanding they signed, present their first co-production as part of the pioneering initiative “The Philippi Festival Travels to the Greek National Opera.” Within the framework of this collaboration, four new productions from this year’s 68th Philippi Festival — all commissioned by the institution, organised by the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Kavala — will travel to Athens under the auspices of the GNO.

Three of the performances ((TREE)², THE INFALLIBILITY OF ONE (1) MARGARITAΣ, STONE+THREAD+HEART=) will be staged in alternative venues of the GNO at the SNFCC, offering audiences direct contact with site-specific creations, while the fourth production ((ALL) THAT WE LEAVE BEHIND <FOR A TOMORROW THAT WILL NEVER COME) will be staged on board the ferry from Piraeus to Aegina, transforming the ship into a stage and the journey into an experience.

Inspired by the work and life of Chronis Missios, to whom this year’s festival is dedicated, and guided by the paradoxical equation of generosity 8–3=11, the performances use language, music, and performance as their primary materials and aspire to forge a unique connection both with the space and the audience, who ultimately become the recipients of the message.

In detail, the productions from the Philippi Festival that will be presented are as follows:

(Tree)²

The performance (Tree)², inspired by the life and work of Chronis Missios, brings to the stage two young people — a boy and a girl — trapped in different places, times, and states of confinement. In a world where fantasy and reality blur, the characters discuss, argue, and seek freedom, grappling with memory, the body, life, death, and the very notion of freedom.

The Infallibility of one (1) MargaritaΣ
Every seed holds the power to become a tree

Inspired by the literary work and life of Chronis Missios, the performance The Infallibility of one (1) MargaritaΣ — a commission by the Kavala Municipal and Regional Theatre — recounts the small story of a great man, a romantic fighter. Using body, voice, and technology, four storytellers and one musician bring to the stage fragments of struggles, dreams, and disappointments. A romantic tale of a bygone era that resembles our own.

Stone + Thread + Heart =
A scenic dream-fantasy inspired by Mount Pangaion

A hybrid of contemporary dance, theatre, and performance that reweaves myths, customs, and ecological narratives of the region. The production draws material from the collective imagination of Mount Pangaion — its Dionysian traditions, the presence of Orpheus, the transformations of the landscape, and local customs such as the Arapides and Babo. Two performers and a women’s chorus weave a new scenic mythology, where the human coexists with the non-human.

(All) That We Leave Behind <For a Tomorrow That Will Never Come
An on-board performance/experience for desires that never made it to shore

On the ship connecting Piraeus and Aegina, a unique performance comes to life, inspired by the truths expressed in the work of Chronis Missios. An ode to everything we never dared: desires left half-spoken, words that never found a mouth to utter them, glances that turned away. This is not an ordinary trip but a lived, onboard experience.
