“Exaggerations!”
by Giannis Kalavrianos, Marianna Kalbari, Vasilis Mavrogeorgiou
Monday 22nd, Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th January
|21:00|
“Exaggerations!” is what we tend to say about what we consider to be beyond the limits of the “normal”. An original composition and convention in which three creators with the double capacity of writer and director have been invited to explore, separately and together, the limits of the open and hidden underlying violence that governs human relationships today. The result is three modern Greek one-act plays, three different stories interpreted by three actors. What connects them is a strong sense of humour, inspiration from contemporary reality and the choice of their creators to move in psychological landscapes where violence touches borders that are ambiguous, dark and complex. Just like our times. But what is considered “normal” today, and who can claim to define it? How is it possible to speak of violence as “normal” or of emotions as “excessive”? Let’s talk about all this…

“20 YEARS ENCARDIA”
an anniversary music performance of encardia on the occasion of their twenty years of uninterrupted presence
Friday 9th of February |21:00|
They introduced themselves to us through the music and songs from the Greek-speaking regions of Southern Italy. They brought us traditional dances from the area, taught us the steps, and we danced endlessly, we cried to the folk songs of love, exile, work, and protest of the Greek-speaking communities, and we sang along with them in the local dialect (Grico).
As they enter their second decade, they offer us, through their now-familiar personal sound, not only the songs we have come to love but also other Greek traditional songs and their own compositions from a new perspective. This perspective comes from a collective that has creatively persisted and thrived for 20 years, continuously surpassing its limits.
From the tarantella of Salento and Naples, the songs of exile and their imaginative world, to Erotokritos by Vincenzo Kornaros and the Raikos of Macedonia, and even the Vertigo by Yiannis Ritsos from the Moonlight Sonata…

“THE OLD WOMEN WHO PICK NETTLES“
secret stories of the women of Thessaly
By Konstantinos Dellas
Tuesday 13th, Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th February |21:00|
Three female figures are portrayed on stage by three young male bodies, speaking about their lives, what they learned from their ancestors, what they experienced as women, and what they pass on to the next generations. Using expressive tools drawn from the raw materials of ritual processes, such as masks and the coordination of speech and body, they navigate between the familiar and the archetypal, the harmless “grandma” and the dangerous healer.
Starting in the region of Thessaly, where women developed a secret code, a latent power based on the use of magic and herbal knowledge, the ability to ward off the evil eye, and other skills using simple everyday materials. These “Women of the Earth” remained invisible for years—even to researchers, who did not consider women’s accounts worthy of recording in the history of a place. The audience is invited to participate in the research and, if they wish, to contribute to the ongoing recording of oral history that began with the start of these performances.

“THE ONES YOU MISSED”
by Danai Liodaki
Thursday, February 22, Friday, February 23, and Saturday, February 24 |21:00|
“Why don’t we all sleep over tonight?”
Realism and fantasy, humour and sensitivity, action and narration alternate, creating a unique performance. Four childhood friends unexpectedly reunite and take action against patriarchy by forming a secret feminist group. When their country’s health minister announces a ban on abortions, the four women decide to escalate their efforts with a major operation. What follows will unite the friends forever.
Through a fantastical story of four women, enriched with real incidents from the recent political past, the performance speaks of the power of collectivity and the female bond. In an era of social cannibalism, “The Ones You Missed” reminds us of the beauty of connecting and fighting against oppression, without losing our sensitivity and, of course, our humour.

THE HOUSE OF GIFTS
by Antonis and Konstantinos Koufalis
Friday 8 – Saturday 9 – Sunday 10 March
Friday & Saturday |21:00| Sunday |19:00|
“…be afraid when you do not feel pain. Pain is not a symptom; it is the beginning of healing…” (excerpt from “The House of Gifts”)
“Female Baggage:
The three heroines of the play carry their baggage and open it in front of the audience. Inside are unhealed wounds, untold stories, memories they wish to forget, denials and disappointments, bitterness, and pieces of other lives they dreamed of but never got to enjoy.” (Authors’ Note)
Three women—Eleni, Vasiliki, and Ioanna—share their traumas. Eleni carries her personal tragedy in the form of a tin fingernail that grew in place of the old one that blackened and fell off. This nail is her armor, her defense. It is what will define her and what will provide a solution… Vasiliki lives in a house where the air is absent. As the child of two problematic parents, she takes control of her life when she realizes her underage daughter is experiencing her own tragedy, lured by a doll… Ioanna is a teenager born a man in a woman’s body. She soon sheds her female identity when, dressed as a boy, she becomes the object of desire for a girl her own age. The outcome is tragic.

Because some people are a message in themselves,
in the way they move through the world,
the way they look, or the way they smile…
A story filled with humour and emotion, focusing on male loneliness and disappointment, yet imbued with a deep sense of dignity as a compass and a final victory in defiance of defeat and decay. Cheetah, a highly experienced veteran goalkeeper of the Greek National Team, gives an honest account of his long career, invited by a school to talk to children about the value of fair play and athletic ideals. On the occasion of World Sports Day, he recounts events and experiences from his life and career, gradually unraveling the thread of his existence, from glory, wealth, and the spotlight to nothingness and the margins.

“CHILDREN’S MUSIC STAGE“
“SILENCE, THE KING IS LISTENING” by Nikos Kypourgos
GREEK NATIONAL OPERA
Monday 13th – Tuesday 14th May
The King of Music is never satisfied, no matter what musical piece his Court Musician presents to him. The Musician, in his despair, is rescued by the Muse, who sees this as an opportunity to “get back to work” after being disconnected since the glorious days of Schubert, Mozart, and Bach. The Muse enlists the seven notes as allies and inspires the Musician to create a wonderful piece. However, even this does not satisfy the King! It is time, then, for imagination to provide the solution (as it always does!).
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and unexpectedly dedicated to the memory of the American pioneer John Cage, “Silence, the King is Listening” was first presented in 1994 at the Athens Concert Hall. Skillfully balancing between lyrical tradition and playful postmodernism, the work serves as an ideal introduction for both young and adult audiences to the concepts, techniques, and tools of musical composition. It also delivers a hilarious and relentless attack on all forms of snobbery and hypocrisy that plague and stifle both the realm of musical creation and its appreciation.
