New series of acting workshops

The Kavala Municipal Theatre, staying true to its commitment to the people of the city who want to get closer to the world of theatre, is organising a new series of acting workshops this year.

The instructors for this series will be the director and actors of the main production, “The Grönholm Method” by Jordi Galceran, which premieres on Friday, 12th April 2024. The workshops will take place from Wednesday, 3rd April to Sunday, 21st April 2024, and participation is free (on a first-come, first-served basis).

Below is the detailed schedule of the workshops:

#1# Improvisation Workshop with Thanasis Chalkias

Wednesday, 3rd April, hours: 18:00 – 21:00
Duration: 3 hours
Maximum number of participants: 14 people

“The suspended step of the actor”

A thousand and one ways (perhaps fewer) to deceive myself—the only obstacle—during the process of approaching a role, verifying a condition, realising an idea, or simply seeing how many landscapes I can discover during a single journey from one end of the stage to the other. This is an improvisation workshop where, using the power of imagination and the freedom of creativity, participants will explore new realms, co-creating a world that is both new and familiar, yet unknown.

CV- Thanasis Chalkias is an actor, director, and theatre scholar. He graduated from the Department of Theatre Studies (University of Athens) and the Archi Drama School. He has performed at the National Theatre, various Municipal and Regional Theatres (DIPETHE), and other theatre groups, as well as in feature and short films. He has directed for the Athens Festival, Thessalian Theatre, and other companies. He is a certified Adult Educator (EOPPEP) and has taught at the Archi Drama School, in theatre groups, vocational training institutes, seminars, and workshops.

#2# Acting Workshop with Theodosis Skarvelis

Saturday, 13th April, and Sunday, 14th April, 16:00 – 19:00
Duration: 6 hours (2 three-hour sessions)
Maximum number of participants: 16 people

Étude: “A Fantastic Meeting”

“Meeting” and “Event”: two fundamental concepts in Russian theatrical terminology. But what happens when the meeting itself becomes the event? In this two-day training course, we will start from “Action” and “Psychophysicality” and dive deep, pushing the given condition of each exercise to the extreme. Through this journey, which may seem short but will be significant, we hope that by the end of the second day, we will have practically understood the basic concepts of Russian theatrical terminology. And this will be just the beginning…

CV- After graduating in 2015 from the Higher School of Dramatic Art “Dilos” – Dimitra Chatoupi, Theodosis Skarvelis worked as an actor and then joined the directing department of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow, under the guidance of L. Kheifits. During his studies, he participated in performances presented at festivals in various cities in Russia and abroad. He has attended seminars and workshops with instructors from Greece and abroad and has participated in several short films. After returning to Greece, he acted in the performances “A Year Has Passed” (dir. N. Stylianou), “Wherever You Go, Don’t Get Lost” (dir. D. Mylonas), and “We the Semi-Humans from Nowhere” (dir. E. Boza). He directed the acoustic performance “Could I Speak with Nina,” the unique film “A Voice,” and the theatrical adaptation of Ch. Chrysopoulos’ novella “The Parthenon Bomber.” He was also the assistant director for A. P. Chekhov’s “Platonov,” directed by Adolf Shapiro, currently playing at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus. In recent years, he has been teaching at the drama schools “New Greek Theatre – G. Armenis” and “Piraeus Association.”

#3# Musical Theatre Improvisation Workshop with Antonis Antoniadis

Saturday, 20th April, and Sunday, 21st April, 16:00 – 18:00

Duration: 4 hours (2 two-hour sessions)

Maximum number of participants: 15 people

“Playing”: Play at the Heart of Creation

Through exercises and group games, we will explore concepts such as dance, collective storytelling, and song as narrative. Experimenting with sounds, voices, and musical instruments, we will create soundscapes, playing with elements like rhythm, tonalities, and colorations. Through play, we will discover how we can become co-creators and ultimately lead to a stage composition.

Participants should choose a poem and a song and may bring a musical instrument (if they have one).

CV- Antonis Antoniadis was born in Veria, Imathia. He graduated from the Drama School “Iakovos Kampanellis” in Agia Varvara and the Law Department of the Democritus University of Thrace. He received his diploma in piano and solo singing with Highest Honors and First Prize. He has attended acting and directing seminars with instructors from Greece and abroad (School of Directing, Summer Oracle, Epidaurus Lyceum, Fabrica Athens), and has participated in several short films. In theatre, he has collaborated with directors such as V. Papavasileiou, Th. Ambazis, G. Kalavrianos, G. Skevas, G. Perlegkas, G. Papageorgiou, V. Kyriakoulakou, among others. He has also worked with the Greek National Opera as a soloist and as a chorister with the ERT Choir, and has been a member of various choral and polyphonic ensembles.

He has composed original music for the play “The Cherry Orchard” directed by E. Miliaris, for the play “Van Gogh-Halepas: Genius and Madness” directed by P. Flouris, and for the short film “ERMA” directed by A. Charalambous. Together with G. Methenitis, he created the band Sunny and Blue, and their first cabaret titled “K and the Traveling Doll.”
