Karmen Rouggeri, Christina Kouloumbi, and their collaborators return on Sunday 17 August at 21:00 to the Ancient Theatre of Philippi, as part of the 68th Philippi Festival, to introduce young and older audiences alike to the one and only Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, transforming the opera “The Magic Flute” into a Musical Fairytale brimming with the marvellous melodies of this singular composer.

A few words about the play:

The King of the Day and the Queen of the Night were once madly in love and decided to unite. But their love lasted only a short while. She was made of lies and malice; he of truth and kindness. She sought to rule through darkness; he wished to reign through light. How could they ever match? They parted, and their great love quickly turned to enmity.

Nine months later, the dark queen gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Pamina, to whom she never revealed the identity of her father. When the king of the day found out, he grew dark with rage. He wanted to take the child and raise her himself. He feared that growing up beside her mother, the girl might inherit her character. So one day, he secretly stole her away and had her guarded in a beautiful tower. The Queen of the Night was furious. She darkened her sky even further and snuffed out her stars. She had to find a way to get her daughter back. So she began searching for a brave young man. One who could help her. She found him in the face of Prince Tamino—and also in the cheerful Papageno.

Prince Tamino—symbol of virtue and love—sees in Pamina his perfect match. But the couple must go through many trials. Armed with love, our heroes will overcome all obstacles and be united forever. By their side stands Papageno, a charming fairytale figure whose antics will bring children joy and laughter. As the story draws to a close, the two foes, the Queen of the Night and the King of the Day, are reconciled. Goodness will triumph over evil and spread across the land.
