“ELECTRA” by Sophocles

Ancient Theatre of Philippi
Wednesday 2 – Thursday 3 August, 21.30

Sophocles’ ELECTRA, under the direction of Lilly Meleme, is travelling with rave reviews in its luggage. The show, which has received excellent reviews from audiences and critics, will be performed for two nights at the Ancient Theatre of Philippi on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 July at 9.30 pm as part of the 66th Philippi Festival. The show is already being touted as one of the summer’s top artistic events, with Lena Papaligoura as Electra delivering one of the most powerful performances of recent years.

She is joined by an ensemble led by Elisavet Moutafi, Ioannis Papazisis, Stratis Hadjistamatiou, Erietta Manouri, David Malteze and Paris Leontios.

This is a major production of Ars Aeterna, co-produced with Neos Kosmos Theatre, which has already been seen by thousands.

In Sophocles’ “Electra”, Electra and Orestes avenge the murder of Agamemnon by Clytemnestra and Aegisthus, paying for the blood with blood. Deeply influenced by his era (late 5th century), which was marked by a spirit of questioning, investigation and deconstruction, Sophocles chooses to tell the myth of the Atreides through the subjective gaze of Electra. A gaze shattered by pain and sorrow that reflects, magnifies and sometimes distorts the reality that surrounds her. It is a grim reality. A universe drowning in corruption and injustice. An unheroic world where everything has been undermined and the order of things has been dangerously disrupted. In this world, Electra chooses to be the only cell of living conscience that will never cease to denounce immorality and hypocrisy. Her voice is a brave and powerful act of active resistance, constantly disturbing and reminding us of the need to redress terrible injustices.

“…Lena Papaligoura gives a tough, desperate, determined, profound Electra. With moderation, with self-control, with emotion, with power: brilliant! And her kommos, unforgettable!”

“Performances that stand out for their profound approach, sets and costumes that straddle the line between the modern and ancient worlds, stunning performances by the chorus that add “extra” doses of sensuous mysticism, make up the most complete performance of the summer that you absolutely must not miss!”
