Aimilios Cheilakis is “Alone with Hamlet” once more.
Dimitris Kamarotos joins him and performs music live on stage.
Hamlet arrives at the Ancient Theatre of Philippi on Wednesday 13 August at 21:00, as part of the 68th Philippi Festival, more alone, more contemporary, more urgent than ever.Aimilios Cheilakis performs the principal roles of Shakespeare’s drama in an evocative production that moved both audiences and critics.
“Alone with Hamlet”, based on Hamlet by William Shakespeare, is a daring adaptation of the iconic play, based on the translation by Giorgos Cheimonas, returning eight years after its last staging. Directed by Aimilios Cheilakis and Manolis Dounias, the performance unfolds the passions, inner conflicts, and tragic irony that run through Hamlet’s story.
A few words about the play: When the King of Denmark dies suddenly, his brother Claudius seizes the throne — claiming not only power, but also the dead king’s wife, Gertrude. The fragile balance is shattered when the Ghost of the King appears: he did not die of natural causes, it reveals — he was murdered. The killer was his own brother, acting with deceit and ambition for the crown. Hamlet vows revenge. To confirm Claudius’ guilt, he invites a troupe of travelling actors to perform a play that mirrors the murder of his father. Claudius’ reaction will betray him and Hamlet’s revenge will be both terrifying and self-destructive.
“Alone with Hamlet” follows the young prince’s attempt to bridge the distance between Thought and Action. Realising that the value system he once believed in, and the illusion of happiness he enjoyed, are dead, Hamlet struggles to hold on to dignity and ideals in a society undergoing ideological collapse. Strangely — or perhaps prophetically — this society resembles our own, four centuries later. The question is no longer “to be or not to be”, but “how to be”: is it better to live doing nothing, or to die acting? This is the question that runs through the performance and becomes its very backbone.
Aimilios Cheilakis becomes Hamlet, Ophelia, Claudius, Gertrude, Polonius, Laertes, Horatio, and the Ghost of the King — holding the audience in a state of heightened alertness. At his side, Dimitris Kamarotos creates a sonic world live on stage that acts as an inner voice, an echo of the tragic hero. With sets and costumes by Alexia Theodoraki, movement by Faidra Daioglou, and lighting by Nikos Vlasopoulos, Alone with Hamlet is a production that returns to the absolute fundamentals of theatrical expression — voice, body, music, and light.
