Exactly 20 years ago, encardia introduced themselves to us with music and songs from the Greek-speaking regions of southern Italy. They introduced the traditional dances of the region to Greece, they taught us the steps, we danced endlessly to their performances, we cried with the folk songs of love, emigration, work and protest of the Greek-speaking people, we sang with them in the local dialect (Grico), we followed them on their travels in the south of Italy.
20 years of encardia. Thousands of concerts all over Greece and abroad, two major musical theatre productions, seven digital albums and an award-winning documentary under their belt.
And while we are still waiting for their next step, they are coming to the ANTIGONE VALAKOU Theatre on Friday the 9th of February 2024 at 9 p.m., at the beginning of their second 20 years, offering us, through their very familiar personal sound, not only the songs we have loved so far, but also other Greek traditional songs and their own with a different perspective. The perspective of a collective that has persevered and endured creatively for 20 years, constantly pushing the boundaries.
From the tarantella of Salento and Naples and the songs of emigration and their fruitopia, to Vincenzo Kornaro’s Erotokritos and the Raiko of Macedonia, and why not Yannis Ritsos’ Vertigo from the Moonlight Sonata…
