9th Ancient Drama Workshop

68th Philippi Festival
&
Ancient Drama Workshop
27.8 – 6.9.2025

«8-3=11»

The Municipal and Regional Theatre of Kavala, as a member of the International Network of Ancient Drama and with the support and funding of the Ministry of Culture, is organising for the 9th consecutive year the Ancient Drama Workshop, which once again forms part of the programme of the 68th Philippi Festival.

The 68th Philippi Festival once again incorporates into its overall presentations a very important institution, which in recent years has breathed new life into the wider area of the Ancient Theatre: the 9th Ancient Drama Workshop. A research-based creative camp held in the region of Krinides, placing the entire process of learning at its core, and allowing for a new, revitalising gaze upon Ancient Drama.

Placing greater emphasis this year as well on teaching and research, and less on the final result, it invites four acclaimed directors-teachers to form working groups and together spend ten days composing, with their knowledge, experiences, bodies and voices, a new world.

In this year’s edition, an 18-member group of students, selected through an open call, will draw inspiration from the Festival’s absurd equation-title “8-3=11” and will seek, through the act of offering, the essence that transforms us – that unique act that makes us, from mere humans, into heroes.

The 9th Ancient Drama Workshop will be taught by (in alphabetical order): Xenia Themeli, Christos Theodoridis, Anastasia Koumidou, Kalliopi Simou.

The open call is addressed to: final-year students and graduates of drama schools, directing schools, and theatre studies university departments (practical orientation).

Classes will take place from 28 August to 5 September 2025, while on Saturday 6 September the resulting performances will be presented, with free admission.

The participation fee for the 9th Ancient Drama Workshop is €100 per person and covers tuition, accommodation (in twin rooms), and half-board (breakfast and lunch). Classes will be held daily and will include both practical exercises and masterclasses with all instructors.

Participants will be selected by the instructors based on their CVs.

Applications for participation (CV required) to [email protected] by Sunday 10 August, with the subject line “Application for the 9th Ancient Drama Workshop”.

The results will be announced on Wednesday 13 August.
