The Municipal and Regional Theatre of Kavala presents the performances created through the 8th Ancient Drama Workshop, marking the conclusion of the 67th Philippi Festival.
In this year’s edition, an 18-member group of participants, selected through an open call, worked together for eleven consecutive days, exploring the utopias and dystopias found in the texts of Ancient Drama. Under the guidance of three acclaimed creators, the workshop aimed to explore new ways of storytelling with a focus on contemporary relevance. Now, the lights go up as they present their discoveries in a work-in-progress format.
Prometheus Bound
Instructor: Kostas Filippoglou
In this theatre workshop titled “Creative Theatre and Ancient Drama,” participants studied the dramatic texts of ancient Greek literature through the pedagogy and aesthetics of physical creative theatre. Focusing on Aeschylus’ tragedy “Prometheus Bound”, five actor-narrators will recount the story of Prometheus, which essentially reflects the history of humankind. The performance incorporates three distinct forms of discourse: the scientific-psychoanalytic discourse, the conversational discourse of a group of friends retelling the myth, and the theatrical discourse, when actors portray the characters of the tragedy. The narrative thus operates simultaneously on these three parallel levels.

Second Messenger of The Bacchae

The focus of the workshop “The Narration of Grief” was the concepts of sacrifice, death, and the sacred victim, explored through the dystopian experience of the Second Messenger in The Bacchae. These themes were examined through learning the text, employing both individual expression and group dynamics, concentrating on the rhythmic management of storytelling and physicality, and investigating the collective body that acts and functions as a single entity on stage. Narrative tools and archetypal motifs from ritual codes were used in this study to approach the theology of Pentheus’ passion, as told through the words of his follower.

Nekyia
The Modern rhapsode
Instructor: Violet Louise
This is an audiovisual narrative based on the 11th rhapsody of Homer’s Odyssey, known as “Nekyia”, translated by Dimitris Maronitis. Odysseus and his companions arrive in the Underworld to seek a prophecy from the soul of the seer Tiresias, to help them return to Ithaca. Odysseus enters the realm of the dead, encountering loved ones, renowned heroes, and distinguished women who desperately wish to return to the world of the living. The aim of our group is to decipher the Homeric landscape. The performers, like a multimedia orchestra, use sounds produced by the voice, body, and simple everyday objects to narrate the story while simultaneously creating soundscapes on stage.
